U.S. 37-mm Ammunition Used in World War II

The typical American 37-mm cartridge has three major parts: the projectile, cartridge case, and primer. The projectile is the business end of the cartridge since it strikes the target kinetically or chemically (explodes). A kinetic round relies on momentum to damage the target. The high-velocity energy or kinetic energy is imparted to the target, causing damage or destruction. The explosive round relies on a violent chemical reaction (the explosion) to defeat a target. The cartridge case contains the propellant (FNH) that drives the projectile out the gun tube on the way to the target. The primer is a small container of a volatile mixture that when struck with a firing pin, ignites and sets off the propellant charge. Brass is typically used for cartridge cases since it is relatively soft, easy to form, seals the firing chamber well and extracts easily from the firing chamber. Brass is also corrosion resistant. For the higher-velocity rounds, the cartridge case is tapered to 37 mm, allowing a large volume for the propellant.

The bourrelet is an accurately machined area near the nose that just fits the lands on the gun. It tends to reduce the pitch and yaw motion of the projectile when leaving the gun tube.
